The final days of the first leg of my trip, days 33, 34 and 35!

September 11, 2012

Well yesterday was day 35 and that is it for this liquid/juice fast.  The last three days were a blur, but the good news is that in 35 days I lost 38.2 pounds.  I will take a little over a pound a day anytime!  This fast had definitely had it’s ups and downs, but overall I became used to it and it became a part of my life.  I would like to thank Joe Cross and his movie “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” for giving me the idea and his website forums for helping me through this process.  Though it was my willpower, it was most assuredly their words of encouragement that helped me through this.  I also want to thank Joe Rogan and Bert Kreischer for all the great podcasts and comedy that helped push me over the edge to want to make a change.  Joe’s kale shakes were what got me on the road to thinking about meal replacements, and Bert just did his own liquid cleanse and has talked about healthy choices on the podcast many times.  Short little disclaimer for dieters that run to listen to the podcast, it is not a weight loss/health podcast, it is about comedy, mixed martial arts, music, drug related topics and anything and everything else from bigfoot to ufos!  So if you aren’t a fan of comedy or MMA, it probably is not your cup of tea.

My last three days I stayed on target with my 3 juices that I have been having throughout the fast with one miso soup on date night.  My standard juices are still a blend of whatever is on hand that is fruit for my morning juice.  A typical one would be blueberries, blackberries, grapes, and apple and an orange.  It usually tastes like a tangy grape juice.  My lunch and dinner drinks are usually a couple of types of berries or grapes, a ton of spinach, a few carrots and an orange.  I never made it to an 80/20 veggie/juice blend, but I did get to 50/50 and I know I could have upped it at the end.  I also started adding coconut water (C2O as per the recommendation of Joe Rogan,) and that helped sweeten up my veggie juice.

I started the couch to five kilometers program once again and did the first two days of it on Saturday while my wife ran circles around me.  I want to get back to being able to run for an entire 5K.  I was able to do run the entire race over a year ago and want to get back there so I can run some shorter races with my wife.  I also did running and weight training on Monday with my trainer and feel great.  I have definitely been able to adjust to working out with fewer calories and still make it count.

I will try to update the blog over my next 4 days as I break my fast leading up to my vacation with the family to Florida.  My plan today is to have fruits and salads with minimal non-dairy dressings.  For breakfast I had a banana and a small amount of peanut butter with it.  I was really happy with it and have felt good and kept it all down for over an hour so my worry about getting sick has proven false.  I am not sure I will be updating the blog the week I am gone, but rest assured that I will update it when I get back because I plan to do a 10 day juice fast till I go to New York for a friends wedding in October!

This first fast was very challenging, and for those people that want to attempt it just remember that it gets easier.  Your first 3-5 days are horrible as your stomach shrinks and you get caffeine withdrawal (if you drink coffee/soft drink like I did!)  The best advice to heed it to not worry about perfection.  I failed many times on my juice fast, whether it was the time I had a salad and green beans at dinner with my boss around day 9, or just last week where I had 5 bites of chicken and dumplings and made myself sick!  We all stumble on diets or new changes to our lives, but the point is to not let that stop all the progress you have made and will make.  My quote that keeps this in my mind is, “The perfect is the enemy of the good” from Voltaire.  Be good and consistent and you will achieve your goals.  I feel like I have finally set my feet on the right path with the right mindset, and if I can do it I know you can to.  Keep reading and I will also be posting some pictures.  I can’t really see differences in photos yet since I still have so much to lose, but I do know that my face has changed!

You can do it!  Juice on!

The perfect is the enemy of the good — So true! Proud of you for finishing strong and knowing that you will continue. I’m on Day 38 and just blogged about “cheating” with a handful of almonds. But I’m gonna keep on truckin’! Found another blog with a woman from New Zealand who just finished a 60-day fast and she is incredible. Her link is http://boulderblather.blogspot.com/ I’m still at it at http://juicing1dayatatime.blogspot.com/ Have a great vacation!
