Journal Update: Not perfect, but I will take it!

I often think of this quote when I try to bring balance into my life, “The perfect is the enemy of good.” It is a quote by Voltaire and it reminds me to not give up if I am not perfect. I am a very all or nothing kind of person and a long term life solution to health is not an all or nothing adventure. It takes time, patience and moderation in food, exercise and just about everything else.

It is tough for me to find that balance, but yesterday was a good day, not great, far from perfect. My food was ok, I had a kind bar for breakfast with a glass of milk. I had a coffee at Starbucks and finally found some Tahini to make my wife homemade hummus. She has been craving it forever! I had some pita, cucumber and hummus as a mid morning snack. We went to a mexican restaurant and I had a few chips and salsa as well as one corn tortilla with guacamle, chicken and some salsa. That was it though and I was glad that I was able to refrain from having the two other fajitas. I did the patented get a to go box early! Dinner was a hamburger from the cow we had bought a year ago that was grass fed and all that good stuff. It really is the best hamburger ever and I knew my family really wanted it so I did it. I had a baked potato and a couple of popchips and called it a night for eating. No crazy binges!

I did not workout too much yesterday, got a little walk in and that was about it. I did go to Starbucks and read half of The Binge Eating and Compulsive Overeating Workbook by Carolyn Coker, MD, MPH.  It is a really good and fast read for me.  I do find it helpful and plan to finish it over this weekend trip to LA.  I really am trying to work on my mental side these days because that is where I need the most effort to get results.

You can expect a review of the book next week and I plan on posting a turkey chili recipe.

Oh and congrats to my son on his last day of preschool!  He and his sister had a great time playing at their little field day. (Gratuitous picture of my babies!)
